Community Safety Message - Suspicious Circumstances

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for information following a report of suspicious circumstances in the area of Low Street, Sherburn in Elmet.

At around 5:40pm on Thursday 30th April 2026, a 13‑year‑old girl was approached by the male driver of a black Mercedes‑Benz SLK on Low Street, Sherburn in Elmet. The male is reported to have followed her briefly before he attempted to hand her a rose and spoke to her in a foreign language. No physical contact was made and the child was able to leave the area safely.

This incident is being treated seriously and enquiries are ongoing.

We would ask parents, carers and guardians to remain vigilant, encourage children to report anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, and remind them not to engage with strangers, particularly from vehicles.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash‑cam or CCTV footage, or who may have seen a black Mercedes‑Benz SLK acting suspiciously in the area around this time is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.
